nd that half of these sums in addition to half salary be paid to married officers on leave.

11. B. Accommodation.

As regards the stations cited:-

Central. Many of the complaints can be remedied when the proposed extension is built. The noise etc. made by the Asiatics is greatly exaggerated and the men can always stop it if they wish. The position of the cookhouse, bath-rooms, and latrines is bad.

No. 5 Station. This is the Fire Brigade Station. The latrine mentioned was obnoxious, but since exhaust fans have been installed, there has been no more throat troubles that could be blamed to this source, although the proximity is certainly not pleasant. The intro- -duction of motors fof fire brigade work, has changed fire brigade conditions. The chief object is always to have sufficient men to man the motor immediately. The riding in jinrikishas, running down from the Central Station and coolies running with hose reels is all out of date. The old Harbour Office would make a suitable site for a now fire brigade station. At present the Europeans have no mess or recrea- -tion rooms, the verandah being the only place other than bedrooms to which they can go when in station.

12. C. Extra leave.

The men at present get a clear 24 hours off once a month if clear from report. They do not always take it. Extra days off would mean less men for ordinary duty.

13. D. Rate of Promotion. The figures given above show that the chance of promotion compares favourably with that existing in the Metropolitan Police Force. The following figures give the numbers in each rank for the years stated:-

1910.
